Badger Region High Performance
Thank you for your interest in the 2012 Badger Region High Performance program! Our teams have won six gold medals in the last two years and have consistently finished in the top 10 in their divisions every year. We’re looking forward to continued success!
What is High Performance?
USA Volleyball has a national High Performance program in place to identify athletes with the potential to become future National Team members. Within the Badger Region, the goal of our High Performance program is to further develop the top players in the Region for their future volleyball pursuits and expose these players to the same training methods of the USA Volleyball National Program while also representing Badger Region at the national HP Championships. The BRHP is essentially a region all-star team and last year we had more than 300 student-athletes participate in the highly-competitive tryouts. See below for age groups and registration information.
Age Groups:
The 2012 Badger Region High Performance teams (5 total) will be made up of the following age groups:
National and Regional Boys – Born in 1995, 1996 and after
International and National Youth Girls – Born in 1996 and 1997
National Select Girls – Born in 1998, 1999 and after
These age groups are set by the FIVB, the international governing body of volleyball.
The Badger Region High Performance (BRHP) program consists of three parts: tryouts, camp, tournament. From the tryouts (more information below), 24-36 males and females at each age level will be selected to participate in the camp (Girls: July 13-15 at UW Green Bay; Boys: TBD - July). From the camp, the BRHP teams will be selected to compete at the national HP Championships, this year scheduled for July 24-28 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Tryouts
Tryouts for the 2012 Badger Region High Performance teams are as follows: (an athlete only needs to attend one):
*Girls: Friday, March 16 at the Expo Center at State Fair Park, West Allis
(Alternate: Friday, March 30 at the Frontier Airlines Center, Milwaukee)
*Boys: Friday, March 30 at the Frontier Airlines Center, Milwaukee
(Alternate: Please contact the Region office to schedule.)
Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m., tryouts start at 6:00 p.m. It is anticipated that tryouts will last approximately three hours. Athletes should wear volleyball apparel (including athletic shoes and knee pads, if preferred), and will be provided with a numbered tryout t-shirt.
The pre-registration cost for BRHP tryouts is $35 and the deadline is March 16 at NOON for the first weekend and March 28 for the second weekend. Walk-ins will be accepted on the day of the tryout for a cost of $70.
To pre-register, please complete the BRHP Athlete Tryout Application, done online (registration is closed for 2012) (please be aware there are two screens, one for information and a second for the $35 payment).
After registration, you will be sent a confirmation email that also contains a link to the medical form (also found here). This medical form needs to be completed and brought to tryouts.
Non-USAV members may also try out by registering online for a one-event membership ($10), with the starting date one day prior to the tryout date, and then completing the online form. If you are selected to the camp, an additional $37 will apply for a full membership. Please contact the Region office with questions.
Individuals selected for the BRHP camp will be posted on the Badger Region website and will be identified by their tryout t-shirt number. Please click HERE for the girls selections and HERE for the boys selections.
The cost for the BRHP camp will be $300 and will include housing and meals. Individuals will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the camp.Girls camp will be July 13-15 at UW Green Bay. Boys camp will be July 13-15 at Lakeland College.
The Badger Region subsidizes much of the cost for those athletes chosen to participate in the HP Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, including entry fee, staff and officials cost and uniforms. The athlete will be responsible for transportation, hotel and food costs, but these will be coordinated by the Badger Region office to ensure the teams travel and stay together, as athletes are required to stay with the team. The expected cost will be determined as soon as possible. If any athlete feels they may not be able to participate because of cost, they should contact the Badger Region office at 414-443-1011 or colleen@badgervolleyball.org or jarmsondyer@badgervolleyball.org .
BRHP Coaches
Coaches for the Badger Region High Performance program are some of the best and brightest in the Region. If you are an Impact-certified coach and would like to help with tryouts, the BRHP camp and/or the BRHP team, please fill out the Badger Region HP Coaching Application and email it to Jen Armson-Dyer in the Badger Region office (jarmsondyer@badgervolleyball.org) and the correct HP chair, either Chad Schreiber (boys / schreibercp@gmail.com) or Paul Schlomer (girls / pschlomer@edgewood.edu).
Thoughts on the Badger Region High Performance Program From Parents and Players:
"It gives an opportunity for volleyball players to play at the highest level. They are playing with phenomenal athletes and it's great to see a group of kids who just meet each other come together and be very successful. Badger Region is respected at that tournament and you can feel the positive rep they have been building over the years the minute you walk into the gym."
***********
"The togetherness and camaraderie of the Badger teams is fun to watch and part of what sets them apart from other regions. Everyone is there to support each other -- boys and girls teams alike. The new friendships the kids develop are great."
***********
"The overall experience for a player is 2nd to none. It gives the girls the opportunity to play in an International level tournament. Working with new coaches and different kids each time to get new perspectives .It was competitive, organized and fun."
***********
"Gettting to work with great area college coaches and playing with girls from all over WI was awesome. Also having the opportunity to watch the other Badger Region teams, along with teams from all over the country/world was an incredible experience."

“My daughter was fortunate enough to play on the Girls National Select team that brought home the Gold. It would be very easy to sit back and say that this program is great just based on the success this team had, and all the Badger Region teams for that matter. However, I've discussed this program with my daughter to get her take on how she liked/disliked it. Here is her list:
Likes:
* Fast paced, exciting tryouts.
* The opportunity to practice/play with some of the Region’s best that she normally has to play against in club.
* The three-day camp allows the girls to bond and form long lasting friendships on and off the court.
* The opportunity to stay with the team at the tournament, again further forming that bond.
* The coaching at the camp and tournament was some of the best she's had.
* Having all the Badger Region teams cheering for each other at the Tournament was particularly special
Dislikes:
* The tournament went way too fast (Honestly that's all she had)
All in all it was a great experience for my daughter and for us as parents.”

“I want to start first by saying that the High Performance experience for my daughter was GREAT! Wow. This was the first year for my daughter and to be honest I was very happy when she made the camp in Green Bay, that alone was a great experience for her. Then to actually play on the championship team was so wonderful. I was pleased with the tryout process and my daughter said the coaches were great and she learned a lot. She made a lot of friends and experienced some excellent volleyball. I have no negative things to say. Thank you to everyone for giving my daughter this opportunity and taking such good care of her and teaching her so much.”
***********
“We were awe struck by the talent on the Select team. Our younger daughter really has her work cut out for her if she is hoping to make that team next year. We were glad that the coaches told her what she needed to work on. They were very honest with her, which we appreciated. She said that she liked how the coaches demonstrated techniques for the girls rather than just "telling" them what to do. We felt that the youth team was made up of the best athletes, regardless of their size or position. It was a wonderful experience for our older daughter to be exposed to the "next level of play.” She has gained a lot of confidence over the last two years and is slowly coming out of her shell. We were glad to see that a cross-section of clubs were represented on both teams. You mentioned that as a goal from the beginning and you were able to achieve it. Thanks again for all your hard work. We were proud to be a part of such a first class organization.”
***********
“Overall, it was a very positive experience. The venue was good, the coaching was good, and the boys enjoyed themselves. A good job was done blending serious competition with the right amount of freedom and enjoyment. The coaching staff seemed to handle things well.”
***********
“Our most important feedback would be how excellent all the coaches were. They all have a way of knowing how to encourage the girls to exceed beyond what they think they are capable of and give feedback in a way the players both understand & can use. "Couldn't ask for better coaches" is what my daughter said. She also told us that she learned to be a better player even though it was a very short amount of time she had with them.”
